Vogler Quartett
Tim Vogler - violin
Frank Reinecke - violin
Stefan Fehlandt - viola
Stephan Forck - cello
Founded in East Berlin in January 1985, with the same musicians today, the Vogler Quartet quickly established itself as one of the finest quartets of its generation, characterised by extraordinary musical intelligence, highly creative playing with homogenous sound, rich nuances, powerful interpretations and unconventional programming.
The four musicians studied at the Hochschule fur Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. Their mentors were Eberhard Feltz, Sandor Vegh, Arnold Steinhardt and Gyorgy Kurtag, while studies with Walter Levin in the USA had a great impact on the quartet’s pratice approach. In May 1986 they came to international prominence through winning the International String Quartet Competition in Evian.
After numerous recordings for BMG/RCA, Nimbus Records, col legno and cpo, the Quartet has been recording for Profil/Edition Gunter Hannsler since 2005. In April 2008 a new CD was released with works by composers from the “New Jewish School”, made with Chen Halevi and Jasha Nemtsov.
In 1993 the Vogler Quartet began its own concert series in the Konzerthaus of its home city of Berlin and since 2000 also in Neubrandenburg (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). From 1999 to 2004 the Quartet was in residence in the County of Sligo (Ireland) creating a unique programme in Europe of concerts, masterclasses and workshops. Their spring festival in Sligo still takes place in May every year. In 2002 the Quartet became artistic director of the chamber music festival in Homburg (Saar) and in 2005 founded an annual chamber music festival for children in Kassel. In 2007 it took over the Chamber Music Residency at the Stuttgart Conservatory from the Melos Quartet.
The Vogler Quartet considers contemporary music a very important aspect of its career and has participated in special projects such as the Rihm Cycle with the Arditti Quartet and the performance of Morton Feldman’s 2nd String Quartet. It regularly premieres new works, the latest being from Michael Beyer (2004), Jorg Widmann (2005) and Mauricio Kagel (2007).
In addition to its involvement in performing contemporary and classical works, the Quartet completes its repertoire with music involving extra instruments as well as works with orchestra (Schoenberg, Hartmann, Schulhoff). The four musicians play in series at the Concertgebouw, Philharmonie Essen, Carnegie Hall and Wigmore Hall and regularly tour and give masterclasses and workshops in North America, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
In 2007, the Vogler Quartet took over from the Melos Quartet the Chamber Music Residency at the Stuttgart Conservatory.
