Foundation IPL events

Science and music share many aspects of human endeavor: both require creativity, intuition and insight, while calling for utmost precision in the execution and presenting a major intellectual challenge. It is no coincidence that many famous scientists are avid musicians and that many a great musician has warm and active interest in the sciences. Intensive interaction between science and music provides a source of inspiration for all concerned.

This vision has prompted us to organize a unique festival in the spring of 2010: chamber music, performed by world-renowned musicians, will be alternated with presentation by famous scientists and discussions between all the participants. A similar getting together of music and science has never been arranged before, and there is great enthusiasm for the idea, both from musicians, scientists and the general public. This festival offers a unique opportunity for the Netherlands to organize a unique international cultural event of great quality and originality!

There is an abundance of reading material to be found. As an introduction, here is a short list of interesting websites:

The European Institute Para Limes (IPL, see www.paralimes.org) for pure, interdisciplinary research based in the Netherlands, aims at contributing to finding solutions for major challenges of our times, such as long term energy supply and stability of complex systems, both natural and technical. These problems do not admit of easy or fast solutions, largely because completely new insights are needed for making progress. Creativity, cross-fertilization, and the courage to explore unpaved avenues of research, together with continuity and dedication are key characteristics for acquiring such insights. The idea for festivals where the arts meet the sciences was born within IPL which was the reason for choosing the name IPL events for the foundation to organize these festivals; however, there is no formal relationship between the two organizations.
